What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils at the back of the throat, caused by viruses or bacteria. Most episodes settle in a few days. When infections keep coming back, or tonsils are very large, tonsil removal may be the better long term option.

Symptoms

  • Sore throat and pain when swallowing
  • Fever
  • Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Bad breath
  • Tonsil stones: small white lumps with an unpleasant smell

When is tonsil removal considered?

  • Repeated tonsillitis in a year that affects work or school
  • An abscess behind the tonsil (quinsy)
  • Enlarged tonsils causing snoring or breathing pauses during sleep
  • Troublesome tonsil stones that keep returning
  • One tonsil much larger than the other

How Dr Yasmin assesses and treats tonsil problems

Dr Yasmin examines the throat and neck and reviews how often infections happen. Acute tonsillitis is treated with pain relief, fluids and antibiotics when needed. If tonsil removal (tonsillectomy) is suitable, she explains the operation, risks, recovery and cost. Surgery is done at Kemena Pacific Hospital under general anaesthetic.

Recovery after tonsil removal

Expect a sore throat for about one to two weeks, often worse around days 5 to 7. Soft food, plenty of fluids and regular pain relief help. Bleeding after surgery is uncommon but needs urgent attention if it happens.

FAQs

Do adults have their tonsils removed?

Yes. Adults with recurrent tonsillitis, quinsy or tonsil stones can benefit from tonsil removal.

Will removing my tonsils weaken my immunity?

No. The body has many other immune tissues, and studies show no meaningful long term effect.

How can I get rid of tonsil stones?

Gargling and good oral hygiene help. For frequent, troublesome stones, tonsil removal may be considered.
