What are tonsils and adenoids?

Tonsils sit at the back of the throat and adenoids sit behind the nose. Both help fight infection in young children. When they become too large or infected again and again, they can block breathing, disturb sleep and affect a child's health and learning.

Signs to watch for

  • Loud snoring most nights
  • Pauses in breathing or gasping during sleep
  • Breathing through the mouth, day and night
  • A constantly blocked or runny nose
  • Repeated sore throats or tonsillitis
  • Restless sleep, bedwetting or daytime tiredness
  • Poor concentration or behaviour problems at school

How Dr. Yasmin assesses and treats tonsil and adenoid problems

Dr. Yasmin examines your child's throat, nose and ears, and may look at the adenoids with a small camera or an X ray. Mild symptoms are often treated with nasal sprays and watched over time. If large tonsils or adenoids are causing breathing problems during sleep, or infections keep returning, she may recommend adenoid removal, tonsil removal, or both. Surgery is done at Kemena Pacific Hospital under general anaesthetic.

When to see an ENT specialist

  • Snoring with pauses in breathing
  • Constant mouth breathing or blocked nose
  • Repeated tonsillitis
  • Hearing problems or repeated ear infections with nasal blockage

FAQs

Is snoring normal in children?

Occasional snoring with a cold is common. Loud snoring most nights, especially with pauses in breathing, should be checked.

How long does recovery take after adenoid or tonsil removal?

Adenoid removal alone usually takes a few days. With tonsil removal, allow about one to two weeks off school.

Will removing adenoids or tonsils affect my child's immunity?

No. Studies show no meaningful long term effect on immunity.
