What is endoscopic sinus surgery?

Endoscopic sinus surgery uses a thin camera and fine instruments passed through the nostrils to open blocked sinuses and remove polyps or diseased tissue. It helps the sinuses drain and lets nasal sprays reach where they are needed. Sinus surgery is one of Dr. Yasmin's main areas of interest.

Who may need sinus surgery?

  • Chronic sinusitis that does not improve with medicine
  • Nasal polyps blocking the nose
  • Repeated sinus infections
  • Sinus problems causing loss of smell
  • Sinus disease combined with a deviated septum

What to expect

Before surgery: A nasal endoscopy and CT scan to plan the operation. Dr. Yasmin explains the benefits, risks, recovery and estimated cost.

On the day: Done at Kemena Pacific Hospital, usually under general anaesthetic. Many patients go home the same day or the next day.

Recovery: Expect a blocked nose and some mild discomfort for one to two weeks. Saline rinses help healing. Most people return to work within one to two weeks.

Follow up: Clinic visits to clean the nose and check healing.

Possible benefits

  • Easier breathing through the nose
  • Fewer sinus infections
  • Less facial pressure and post nasal drip
  • Improved sense of smell in many patients

FAQs

Will sinus surgery change the shape of my nose?

No. The surgery is done through the nostrils and does not change how your nose looks.

Is sinus surgery painful?

Most patients describe pressure and congestion rather than strong pain. Pain relief is provided.

Will my sinus problems come back?

Surgery greatly improves symptoms for most patients. Continued use of sprays helps keep the sinuses healthy, especially for polyps.
