What is a deviated septum?

The septum is the wall of bone and cartilage that divides the nose into two sides. When it is bent, one or both sides of the nose can be narrowed, making it hard to breathe. A deviated septum can be present from birth or caused by an injury. It often occurs together with swollen turbinates.

Symptoms

  • Blocked nose, often worse on one side
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose, especially during exercise or sleep
  • Mouth breathing and dry mouth
  • Snoring
  • Repeated sinus infections
  • Nosebleeds

How Dr. Yasmin assesses a deviated septum

Dr. Yasmin examines the inside of the nose with a nasal endoscopy to see the shape of the septum and the size of the turbinates. She also checks for allergies or sinus disease that may be adding to the blockage.

Treatment options

Medical treatment: Nasal sprays help when swelling of the lining is part of the problem.

Septal surgery (septoplasty): Straightens the septum through the nostrils, with no cuts on the outside of the nose.

Turbinate surgery: Reduces swollen turbinates, often done together with septoplasty.

Recovery: Most patients return to normal activity within one to two weeks.

When to see an ENT specialist

  • A nose that is always blocked on one or both sides
  • Sprays from the pharmacy no longer help
  • Snoring or poor sleep due to a blocked nose
  • A blocked nose after a nose injury

FAQs

Will septoplasty change the look of my nose?

No. Septoplasty is done inside the nose and does not change its outside shape.

Is a deviated septum common?

Yes. Most people have some bend in the septum. It is only treated when it causes symptoms.

Can sprays fix a deviated septum?

Sprays can reduce swelling of the lining but cannot straighten the septum itself.
