Nasal Polyps
NOSE / NASAL POLYPS
Diagnosis, medical treatment and endoscopic removal of nasal polyps by consultant ENT surgeon Dr Nurhani Yasmin Abdul Rahman at Kemena Pacific Hospital.
What are nasal polyps?
Nasal polyps are soft, painless swellings that grow from the lining of the nose and sinuses. They are not cancer, but they can block the nose, reduce smell and cause repeated sinus problems. They are often linked to long term inflammation, allergies or asthma.
Symptoms
- Blocked nose on one or both sides
- Reduced or lost sense of smell and taste
- Runny nose and post nasal drip
- Snoring or mouth breathing
- Facial pressure
How Dr Yasmin diagnoses nasal polyps
Polyps can be seen clearly with a nasal endoscopy in clinic. A CT scan may be arranged to see how far they extend into the sinuses. Polyps on one side only are examined carefully and may be sampled to rule out other growths.
Treatment options
Medical treatment: Steroid nasal sprays, saline rinses and sometimes a short course of steroid tablets to shrink the polyps.
Surgical removal: When medicine is not enough, polyps are removed with endoscopic sinus surgery through the nostrils, with no cuts on the face.
Long term care: Polyps can return, so ongoing sprays and follow up help keep them under control.
When to see an ENT specialist
- A blocked nose that does not improve
- Loss of smell
- A growth seen inside the nose
- Polyps on one side only
FAQs
Are nasal polyps cancer?
No, they are almost always harmless. Polyps on one side only are checked more closely.
Can polyps go away without surgery?
Smaller polyps often shrink with steroid sprays or tablets. Larger ones may need removal.
Can nasal polyps come back after surgery?
They can, which is why continuing nasal sprays and regular checks matter.
