Allergic Rhinitis
NOSE / ALLERGIC RHINITIS
Nose allergies are the special interest of consultant ENT surgeon Dr Nurhani Yasmin Abdul Rahman. Get to the bottom of constant sneezing, a runny nose and nasal blockage at Kemena Pacific Hospital.
What is allergic rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the nose lining caused by allergens such as house dust mites, pollen, mould and pet dander. Non allergic rhinitis causes similar symptoms without an allergy, often triggered by smoke, haze, strong smells or changes in temperature. Both are common in Malaysia and very treatable.
Symptoms
- Frequent sneezing, especially in the morning
- Runny nose with clear mucus
- Blocked or stuffy nose
- Itchy nose, eyes or throat
- Post nasal drip
- Poor sleep and tiredness
Common triggers
- House dust mites
- Haze and air pollution
- Pets
- Mould in humid homes
- Cigarette smoke and strong smells
- Air conditioning and temperature changes
How Dr Yasmin assesses and treats nose allergies
Dr Yasmin examines the nose with a nasal endoscopy and checks for polyps, a deviated septum or sinus disease that can make symptoms worse. Allergy testing may be arranged to find your specific triggers. Treatment combines avoiding triggers, saline rinses and the right medicated sprays and tablets, with clear guidance on using them correctly. When swollen turbinates keep the nose blocked despite treatment, turbinate surgery may help.
When to see an ENT specialist
- Symptoms on most days for weeks
- Sprays and antihistamines not helping
- Blockage on one side only
- Loss of smell
- Allergies affecting sleep, work or school
