Conditions and treatment
When should I see an ENT specialist instead of a GP?
When symptoms last more than a few weeks or keep coming back: a blocked nose for 12 weeks, hoarseness for three weeks, repeated tonsillitis, sudden hearing loss or a neck lump that does not go away.
Is a nasal endoscopy painful?
No. A numbing spray is used first, and it takes a few minutes.
Will sinus surgery change the shape of my nose?
No. It is done through the nostrils with no cuts on the face.
Is snoring something an ENT specialist treats?
Yes. Snoring with pauses in breathing, choking at night or daytime tiredness can point to sleep apnoea and should be checked.
When does a child need tonsil removal?
It is usually considered after repeated tonsillitis in a year, or when large tonsils cause snoring and pauses in breathing at night.
Is every neck lump cancer?
No. Most are swollen glands from infection, but a lump lasting more than a few weeks should be examined.
