Fluid in the Ear and Ear Tubes
EAR / FLUID IN THE EAR
Assessment and treatment of fluid behind the eardrum in adults and children, including ear tube (grommet) insertion, with consultant ENT surgeon Dr Nurhani Yasmin Abdul Rahman at Kemena Pacific Hospital.
What is fluid in the ear?
Fluid can collect behind the eardrum when the eustachian tube, which connects the ear to the back of the nose, does not drain properly. It muffles hearing and can last for weeks or months. In children it is called glue ear. In adults, fluid in one ear should always be examined, including the back of the nose.
Symptoms
- Muffled hearing
- A blocked or full feeling in the ear
- Popping or crackling sounds
- Mild ear discomfort
- In children: not responding when called, speech delay, turning up the TV
Common causes
- Colds and upper respiratory infections
- Nose allergies and sinus problems
- Enlarged adenoids in children
- Pressure changes from flying or diving
- In adults, rarely, a growth at the back of the nose
How Dr Yasmin assesses and treats fluid in the ear
Dr Yasmin examines the eardrum, arranges a hearing test and, in adults, examines the back of the nose with an endoscope. Many cases clear with time or treatment of nose allergies. If fluid stays for months and affects hearing, she may recommend ear tube insertion: a tiny tube placed in the eardrum to let air in and fluid drain. Adenoid removal may also be advised for children.
When to see an ENT specialist
- Muffled hearing lasting more than a few weeks
- Fluid in one ear in an adult
- A child with hearing or speech concerns
- Repeated ear infections
FAQs
What are ear tubes?
Tiny tubes placed in the eardrum during a short procedure to let air into the middle ear. They usually fall out on their own after several months.
Do adults get fluid in the ear?
Yes. In adults, especially in one ear, it should always be checked, including an examination of the back of the nose.
Will my child's hearing return to normal?
In most children, hearing returns to normal once the fluid clears or ear tubes are inserted.
