What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is hearing a sound, such as ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming, that does not come from outside. It can be constant or come and go, in one ear or both. It is common and usually not dangerous, but it can affect sleep and concentration.

Symptoms

  • Ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming in one or both ears
  • Sound that is louder at night or in quiet rooms
  • Reduced hearing
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating

Common causes

  • Hearing loss from age or noise exposure
  • Ear wax blockage
  • Ear infection or fluid behind the eardrum
  • Some medicines
  • Stress and tiredness
  • Less commonly, problems with the hearing nerve

How Dr Yasmin assesses and treats tinnitus

Dr Yasmin examines the ears and arranges a hearing test to look for a treatable cause such as wax, infection or hearing loss. When a cause is found, treating it often reduces the tinnitus. When no single cause is found, she advises on practical ways to manage the sound, including sound therapy, better sleep habits and stress management. Tinnitus in one ear only may need further tests.

When to see an ENT specialist

  • Tinnitus in one ear only
  • Tinnitus with sudden hearing loss or dizziness
  • Tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat
  • Tinnitus affecting your sleep or daily life
