What is ear wax blockage?

Ear wax protects the ear canal and usually clears on its own. When it builds up or is pushed deeper, often by cotton buds, it can block the ear and muffle your hearing.

Signs of ear wax blockage

  • Blocked or muffled ears
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Reduced hearing
  • Itching or mild discomfort
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Dizziness in some cases

Common causes

  • Using cotton buds, which push wax deeper
  • Narrow or hairy ear canals
  • Wearing earphones or hearing aids
  • Naturally producing more wax

How Dr Yasmin removes ear wax

Dr Yasmin examines the ear canal under magnification, then removes the wax gently with suction or fine instruments. You can see and hear the difference straight away in most cases. If the wax is very hard, she may advise softening drops for a few days first.

When to see an ENT specialist

  • Blocked ears that do not clear with drops
  • Ear wax with pain, discharge or reduced hearing
  • A history of a hole in the eardrum or ear surgery
  • Children with blocked ears or reduced hearing

FAQs

Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears?

No. Cotton buds push wax deeper and can injure the ear canal or eardrum.

How often should ear wax be removed?

Only when it causes symptoms. Some people need removal once a year; many never do.
